What Can You Eat With Braces?

Your braces are pretty tough - in fact, NASA originally designed some of the materials in your braces for use in space! But just like the space shuttle, they can be damaged or broken when not taken care of properly. SWPDO wants to help you take care of your braces, starting with the food you eat! One of the top reasons brackets and bands are broken is due to the foods you eat, so Dr. Urbaniak has created a "cheat sheet" to help you get your grub on safely!

For most situations, common sense will tell you what to avoid. Hard foods, sticky foods and foods high in sugar must be avoided. Hard foods can break or damage wires and brackets. Sticky foods can get caught between brackets and wires. Minimize sugary foods; they cause tooth decay and related problems. Nail biting, pencil and pen chewing and chewing on foreign objects should be avoided.

Examples of Sticky Foods to Avoid:

  • Gum (sugar-free or regular)
  • Licorice
  • Sugar Daddies
  • Toffee
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramels
  • Starburst
  • Skittles
  • Laffy Taffy
  • Gummy Bears, etc.

Examples of Hard Foods to Avoid:

  • Jolly Ranchers
  •  Lolly pops, candy canes
  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Hard taco shells
  • French bread crust/rolls
  • Corn on the cob
  • Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Pizza crust

Popcorn:

  • The hull gets caught in between teeth and gums, creating infections and abscess.

Minimize Sugary Foods like:

  • Cake
  • Cookies
  • Pie
  • Candy

Drinks to Void Due to High Acid Content:

  • Gatorade
  • Energy or sports drinks
  • Kool-Aid
